Amongst colleagues, effective listening increases productivity, team morale and the bottom line. And amongst friends and family, it increases connection, intimacy and harmony.

But when our listening is distracted, distorted or partial, it negatively impacts every aspect of our life.

To listen well we have to become present—first to ourselves and then to the other person. We have to recognize and relinquish our own projections and distortions. And we have to tune in to the emotional reality of the other person.
